UW-La Crosse 62, Viterbo University (Wis.) 59
La Crosse, Wis. - Tony Mane hit a 25-foot jumper at the buzzer to give the UW-La Crosse men's basketball team a 62-59 victory over city-rival Viterbo University Tuesday night in the 21st Annual Alumni Cup game in the R.W. Beggs Senior Gymnasium.
The Eagles improve to 4-0 on the season with their sixth straight win over the V-Hawks. UW-L now leads the Alumni Cup series, 12-9, and the overall series, 13-10. Viterbo falls to 2-5 with Tuesday's loss.
Mane scored UW-L's final 13 points and finished with 30 overall.
UW-L trailed 56-55 when Mane drove to the basket to give the Eagles a 57-56 lead with 1:01 remaining. Viterbo came right back to tie the contest as Scott Buschman hit the first of two free throws. He then missed the second and was called for a foul after trying to get his own miss. Mane hit two free throws with :41 left to make it 59-57.
Viterbo went right back to Buschman who tied the game on a baby hook shoot to tie it 59-59 with :27 left. The V-Hawks took a timeout and the Eagles later called timeout with :08 left to set-up the final shot. After a :30 Viterbo timeout,
Jordan Rumpel inbounded the ball to Mane in the backcourt, who dribbled up and two players on him, hit the game-winning three-pointer.
The three officials came over to review the clock and verified the three-pointer was made before it sounded.
Viterbo led by as many as 14 points in the second half at 40-26 with 17:13 remaining. UW-L went on a 13-2 run to cut the lead to 42-39 with 13:34 left after a
Cory Degner jumper. The Eagles took their first lead since a 5-4 advantage as Mane hit a jumper with 4:01 remaining. Eric Ambrose gave Viterbo the lead back on a jumper with 2:54 left. The Eagles'
Austin Scott was called for a technical foul with 2:00 left after Ambrose grabbed an offensive rebound, but Ambrose missed both free throws. Ambrose hit both free throws on the foul to give the V-Hawks a 56-53 lead.
Mane hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 56-55 with 1:45 left and gave UW-L a 57-56 advantage with his jumper with 1:01 remaining.
Along with Mane's 30 points, Scott finished with eight points for UW-L while
Trevor Stratton had seven. The Eagles shot 45.8% from the field, including 41.2% (seven-of-17) from three-point range. UW-L shot 60.9% from the field in the second half, including hitting four-of-six from beyond the arc.
The Eagles were 11-of-13 (84.6%) at the free throw line.
Buschman led Viterbo with 23 points and 10 rebounds while Ryan Ambrose had 14. Eric Ambrose and Nick Stillwell each had 10 points. The V-Hawks shot 43.8% from the field, including 25.0% (two-of-eight) from three-point range. Viterbo was 15-of-21 (71.4%) at the line.
The teams combined for 16 turnovers (seven for UW-L and nine for Viterbo).
UW-L returns to action Saturday, Nov. 28 at Dakota Wesleyan University (S.D.) at 3 p.m.
