Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team earned a 25-7 victory at UW-Stevens Point Friday night to improve to 12-2 in duals this season. The Eagles are now 3-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Pointers fall to 7-7 overall and 2-1 in the conference. UW-L entered the dual ranked sixth in NCAA Division III while UW-Stevens Point was 20th.
Friday's dual started at 141-pounds as the Eagles'
Alex Dahl earned a win by decision (4-1) over Mark Puckhaber to give UW-L a 3-0 lead. Third-ranked
Matt Mauseth made it 6-0 as he won by decision (5-2) over the Pointers' Kris Magruder at 149-pounds.
UW-L's
Ryan Farwell and
Cory Ferguson gave the Eagles a 12-0 advantage with wins by decision. Farwell defeated Andrew Dilworth at 157-pounds (5-0) while Ferguson, currently ranked eighth in NCAA III, defeated Jordan Schulte at 165-pounds (4-3).
Mike Schmitz, ranked second at 174-pounds for UW-L, won by major decision (13-1) over Dennis Reckelberg to make it 16-0.
UW-Stevens Point's Ben Engelland cut the lead to 16-4 as he won by major decision (9-0) over
Mitch Artist at 184-pounds. UW-L's
Brenden Faust and
Dan Laurent came back with wins and a 22-4 advantage. Faust won by decision (4-2) over Brandon Jochem at 197-pounds while Laurent also earned a win by decision (4-2) over Bret Oswald at 285-pounds. Laurent is ranked third in the country.
Tenth-ranked Joe Mileski gave the Pointers' their second victory with a win by decision (11-9) over the Eagles'
Albie McKinney at 125-pounds to make it 22-7.
UW-L's
Adam Sheley finished the dual with a win by decision (5-3) over Jordan Kust at 133-pounds.
UW-L returns to aciton Tuesday, Jan. 19 hosting UW-Oshkosh at 7 p.m. in Mitchell Hall.
