UW-Platteville Pulls Away in Second Half

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team fell 86-64 at UW-Platteville Saturday night on Bo Ryan Court. The Eagles drop to 14-6 overall and 6-5 in the WIAC while the Pioneers improve to 11-8 overall and 5-5 in the conference.

The contest was tied 8-8 before UW-Platteville went on a 10-0 run to lead 18-8 with 12:13 remaining in the first half. The Pioneers led 29-16 with 6:53 left, but the Eagles went on a 14-5 run to cut the deficit to 34-30 with 2:46 left after a Tony Mane three-pointer. UW-Platteville ended the half on a 7-2 run to lead 41-32.

UW-L cut the lead to 43-34 with 19:14 left on a Al Chery layup, but UW-Platteville came right back scoring the next five points. The Eagles made it 50-42 with 15:00 remaining, but the Pioneers went on an 9-1 run. UW-L could get no closer than 10 points the rest of the game.

Mane led UW-L with 30 points, including 22 in the first half. He finished 12-of-22 from the field, including four-of-seven from three-point range, and hit both of his free throw attempts.

Chery added nine points, six rebounds and four blocks while Andy Merklein had eight points.

UW-L shot 51.0% from the field, including 30.8% (four-of-13) from three-point range. The Eagles shot 41.7% (10-of-24) at the free throw line and missed all 10 of their first half free throw attempts.

Curt Hanson led UW-Platteville with 28 points, going five-of-eight in three-point attempts. Eric Wall had 17 points and seven rebounds while Shane Kieler finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.

The Pioneers shot 55.6% from the field, including 68.8% (11-of-16) from three-point range, and 80.6% (25-of-31) at the free throw line.

UW-L returns to action Saturday, Feb. 3 at UW-Whitewater at 7:05 p.m.

UW-L’s athletic teams sport a contemporary Eagle in the L and caricature created in 1989. Dave Christianson, a 1973 art major graduate, penned the images after the UW-L men’s teams took the Eagles moniker. Women’s teams started sporting the Eagles moniker in November 1990.
