Second-Ranked UW-Stevens Point Earns Win over UW-L

In a contest featuring teams in the top-25, the second-ranked UW-Stevens Point Pointers earned a 73-57 victory over 23rd-ranked UW-La Crosse Saturday night on Bennett Court. The Eagles fall to 12-3 overall and 4-2 in the WIAC while the Pointers improve to 13-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

UW-Stevens Point has won 18 straight over UW-L and 25 of the last 26 overall.

The game was tied 11-11 with 14:17 left in the first half when UW-L's Cory Degner completed a three-point play and Jordan Rumpel scored on a layup to give the Eagles' a 16-11 lead.

UW-Stevens Point led 22-21 with 8:03 remaining in the first half when it went on a 8-2 run. The Pointers led 38-33 at intermission.

The Pointers opened the second half on a 9-3 run to lead 47-36. The Eagles cut the lead to nine points three different times, including 51-42 with 12:39 remaining, but the Pointers went on a 17-4 run to lead 68-46.

Tony Mane led UW-L with 11 points while Al Chery had 10 points. Trevor Stratton and Andy Merklein each scored seven points for the Eagles while Rumpel had a team-high seven rebounds.

UW-L shot 36.5% from the field, including 30.0% (three-of-10) from three-point range. The Eagles shot 72.7% (16-of-22) at the free throw line.

Matt Moses led UW-Stevens Point with 23 points while Jared Jenkins finished with 17 and Jordan Brezinski 13. The Pointers shot 49.1% from the field, including 30.0% (three-of-10) from three-point range. The team shot 85.7% (18-of-21) at the line.
