UW-L Completes Regular Season with Win at UW-Eau Claire

Eau Claire, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team wrapped up its regular season with a 51-3 victory at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Wednesday night in McPhee Physical Education Center. The Eagles improve to 14-3 overall in duals and finish 5-0 in the WIAC. The Blugolds are now 1-17 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

UW-L, ranked sixth in NCAA Division III, won nine of 10 matches Wednesday night.

The Eagles' Albie McKinney won by forfeit at 125-pounds for a 6-0 lead. Adam Sheley followed with a win by technical fall (16-1) over Brian Reier at 133-pounds and a 11-0 lead.

Alex Dahl and Bobby Dorn earned back-to-back wins by fall for a 23-0 lead. Dahl defeated Zach Weisenberger by fall (1:50) at 141 and Dorn pinned Josh Baier (1:19) at 149.

UW-Eau Claire earned its only win at 157-pounds as Jon Ames won by decision (5-1) over JR Lewis. The win made it 23-3.

UW-L finished with victories in the final five matches. Cory Ferguson (165), Mike Schmitz (174), Mitch Artist (184), Andy Moore (197) and Dan Laurent (285) earned wins. Ferguson, ranked ninth in the country, won by technical fall (15-0) over Levi Polus while Schmitz also won by technical fall (15-0) over Keith Dawson. Schmitz is currently third in the NCAA Division III rankings.

Artist, Moore and Laurent earned wins by fall. Artist defeated Will Christ (1:04), Moore defeated Andy Meyer (2:51) and Laurent picked up the fall over Joe Pitsch (:52). Moore and Laurent are both ranked third.

UW-L returns to action Sunday, Feb. 21 at the WIAC Championships at UW-Stevens Point at 9 a.m.

UW-L's student-athletes recorded a cumulative grade point average of 3.210 in 2010-11, the highest in the WIAC.  The Eagles also had the highest number of student-athletes, 376, posting grade point averages above 3.000.
