UW-L Wins Zuerlein Invite; Hooper Captures Vault

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse gymnastics team captured the John Zuerlein Invitational at UW-Stout Friday night in Johnson Fieldhouse. The Eagles finished with a team score of 181.550 while UW-Stout was second with 177.000. UW-Oshkosh placed third (176.375) and UW-Eau Claire fourth (174.125).

UW-L scored 46.575 on vault; 43.650 on the uneven paralle bars; 44.875 on the balance beam and 46.450 on the floor exercise.

Gabi Hooper won the vault title Friday night (9.525) while Kelsey Matula and Courtney Gonzales each recorded second-place finishes. Matula tied for second on the uneven parallel bars (8.925) and finished second on the balance beam (9.500) while Gonzales was second on the floor exercise (9.425).

Hooper also tied for fifth on the uneven parallel bars (8.925) and was seventh on the floor exercise (9.225).

Gonzales recorded three top-eight finishes overall. Along with placing second on the floor exercise, she was fourth on the vault (9.325) and eighth on the balance beam (8.750).

Jen Andersen was third on the balance beam (9.325) for UW-L.

The Eagles' Kendra Klein was fourth (9.350) and Jenna Swails fifth (9.325) on the floor exercise. Emily Dinse finished fifth on the vault (9.275) while Swails and Katrina Schuch tied for seventh (9.225).

UW-L returns to action Friday, Feb. 19 hosting Winona State University (Minn.) and Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) at 6:30 p.m.

UW-L placed seventh in the 2009-10 NCAA Division III Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings.  It ties the best finish in school history.  The Eagles are one of six institutions in NCAA Division III history to finish in the top-20 all 15 years of the Sports Directors' Cup.
