Diehl and Misener Win Titles at WIAC Championships

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's swimming & diving team remains in second-place after the second day of competition at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships Friday night at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. The Eagles have 564 team points while UW-Stevens Point leads the men's standings with 669 points.

UW-Eau Claire is third (330) followed by UW-Whitewater (321), UW-Oshkosh (239) and UW-River Falls (105).

UW-L's Matthew Diehl and Kevin Misener both captured individual titles Friday. Diehl won the 100 breaststroke (56.21) while Misener captured the 100 backstroke (51.76). Both met the NCAA Division III "B" qualifying standards.

The Eagles' 200 medley (1:32.62) and 800 freestyle (6:55.62) relays placed second Friday as both met the national "B" qualifying standards.

UW-L had four of the top-seven finishers in the 200 freestyle Friday as Justin Dembski placed third (1:44.06), Jared Krueger fourth (1:44.75), Colin Schmidt sixth (1:46.77) and Simon Weisse seventh (1:47.38).

Casey Borden was fourth (52.96) and Benjamin Knutson seventh (54.96) in the 100 backstroke.

Joel Knuesel was seventh (52.35) and Spencer Loch eighth (52.63) in the 100 butterfly while Kurt Zehel placed seventh in the 400 I.M. (4:19.03).

In the three-meter diving competition, Trey Edgerle was fourth (374.85 points), Casey Chamberlain fifth (352.80) and Patrick Schulze eighth (316.05).

Action concludes Saturday at the University of Minnesota.

UW-L's student-athletes recorded a cumulative grade point average of 3.210 in 2010-11, the highest in the WIAC.  The Eagles also had the highest number of student-athletes, 376, posting grade point averages above 3.000.
