Hoff and LaValley Earn Honors at WIAC Championships

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's swimming & diving team finished second at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships Saturday night at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. The Eagles had 792 team points while UW-Stevens Point captured the title with 878.5 points.

UW-Eau Claire placed third (788.5) followed by UW-Whitewater (367), UW-Oshkosh (236) and UW-River Falls (171).

In Saturday's action, Chelsea Hoff, Katelyn Hartung, Danielle Ellingson and Rachel LaValley captured individual conference titles. Hoff took the 200 backstroke with an NCAA Division III "B" qualifying time of 2:04.70 while Hartung captured the 100 freestyle with a "B" qualifying time of 52.38.

Ellingson also met "B" qualifying status as she won the 200 breaststroke with a WIAC record time of 2:22.62. LaValley won the three-meter diving competition with 403.40 points.

UW-L won the 400 freestyle relay with a "B" national qualifying time of 3:28.18. The relay consisted of Hoff, Ellingson, Abby Diehl and Hartung.

Hoff and LaValley both earned conference honors at the completion of the meet. For the third straight season Hoff was named the WIAC Women's Swimmer of the Meet. She was also selected the 2009-10 Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete for Women's Swimming & Diving.

LaValley was named the WIAC Women's Diver of the Meet for the second straight season Saturday.

UW-L's Dayna Johnson was second (2:10.96) and Taylor Smith fourth (2:14.24) in the 200 butterfly Saturday night. The Eagles' Brianna Peyer was fifth in the 100 freestyle (53.94). Peyer was also named to the 2009-10 All-WIAC Sportsmanship Team.

Other top finishes Saturday included Elisabeth Misener placing fifth (2:11.11) and Jennifer Bryson eighth (2:17.28) in the 200 backstroke while Emily Schweitz finished fifth (2:31.50) and Shannon Carlin eighth (2:34.34) in the 200 breaststroke.

In the three-meter diving, Shannon Doyle placed third (383.15 points) and Samantha Koch fourth (373.80).

UW-L returns to action Friday, Feb. 19 hosting a Last Chance Qualifying Meet at 4 p.m. in Mitchell Hall.

Did You Know...
UW-L's student-athletes recorded a cumulative grade point average of 3.210 in 2010-11, the highest in the WIAC.  The Eagles also had the highest number of student-athletes, 376, posting grade point averages above 3.000.
