UW-Whitewater Rallies Late for Win over UW-L

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team rallied for a 69-64 victory over the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Wednesday night in Mitchell Hall. The Warhawks, receiving votes on this week's d3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, improve to 15-5 overall and 8-3 in the WIAC while the Eagles fall to 14-7 overall and 6-6 in the conference.

UW-L led 13-10 with 12:26 remaining in the first half when it went on a 14-2 run to lead 27-12 with 6:14 left. The Eagles led 29-15, but the Warhawks ended the half on a 9-3 run to cut the halftime deficit to 32-24.

UW-Whitewater went on a 8-2 run to start the second half to cut the lead to 34-32 with 17:22 remaining, but UW-L regained a double-digit lead at 50-39 with 11:21 left. The Eagles later led 55-45 with 8:57 left after a Taylor Larson three-point field goal, but the Warhawks' Nicole Bundy responded with a three-pointer of her own to make it a seven point game. UW-Whitewater cut the lead to 55-50 with 7:47 left after a pair of Kelsey Hendrickson free throws.

The Eagles later led 58-52 after Lindsey Litrenta hit one-of-two at the line before the Warhawks went on an 11-0 run to lead 63-58 with 1:52 remaining. Cortney Kumerow gave UW-Whitewater a 59-58 lead with 4:00 left. It was the team's first lead since 4-2.

UW-L trailed 63-62 after a Stacie Van Handel layup with 1:07 left, but Bundy gave UW-Whitewater a three-point lead with a jumper with :37 remaining. After a UW-L timeout, Hendrickson hit a pair of free throws to make it 67-62, but Litrenta cut it to 67-64 on a layup with :22 left. Heidi Sonntag missed the front end of a one-and-one for UW-Whitewater with :19 remaining, but Larson's three-pointer was missed with :07 left and Bundy secured the win with two free throws with :04 left.

Litrenta led UW-L with a career-high 18 points while Danielle Frank tied her career-high with 17 points. Frank also had a game-high 15 rebounds and four blocks. Dana Churchill finished with nine points and six rebounds while Van Handel had seven points and six rebounds.

UW-L shot 40.9% from the field, including 21.1% (four-of-19) from three-point range, and 75.0% (six-of-eight) at the free throw line.

Bundy led UW-Whitewater with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Hendrickson finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. Sonntag added 12 points and five assists. The Warhawks shot 38.2% from the field, including 30.0% (three-of-10) from three-point range, and 77.8% (14-of-18) at the line.

UW-L returns to action Saturday, Feb. 6 at UW-Superior at 3:05 p.m.
