Hooper Leads UW-L to Victory in Gershon/McLellan Invitational

captured the vault and floor exercise titles and Kelsey Matula tied for first on the balance beam as the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse gymnastics team won the 29th Annual Gershon/McLellan Invitational Friday night in Mitchell Hall. It is the Eagles' 10th title in the Gershon/McLellan.

UW-L finished with a team score of 180.025 while UW-Eau Claire was second with 175.350 and UW-Oshkosh third with 174.500.

The Eagles scored 45.425 on the vault; 43.500 on the uneven parallel bars; 45.000 on the balance beam and 46.100 on the floor exercise.

Hooper won the vault (9.300) and floor exercise (9.450) while Matula tied for the title on the balance beam (9.425). Matula was also second on the uneven parallel bars (9.275) and fourth on the floor exercise (9.300).

UW-L's Emily Dinse finished fourth in the all-around (33.050) and vault (9.050).

Other top finishes for the Eagles included Courtney Gonzales placing third on the vault (9.100); Chelsey Luck third on the uneven parallel bars (8.950) and Rachel Budelier third on the balance beam (9.325).

UW-L's Kendra Klein was fifth on the vault (9.000) while Hailey Sommer finished fifth on the uneven parallel bars (8.725). Jen Andersen tied for fifth on the balance beam (9.050) and Jenna Swails was fifth on the floor exercise (9.250).

UW-L returns to action Friday, Feb. 12 at the UW-Stout Zuerlein Invitational at 6 p.m. in Menomonie.

UW-L’s athletic teams sport a contemporary Eagle in the L and caricature created in 1989. Dave Christianson, a 1973 art major graduate, penned the images after the UW-L men’s teams took the Eagles moniker. Women’s teams started sporting the Eagles moniker in November 1990.
