Nowicki Places Third at Wartburg Pentathlon

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's track & field team had five student-athletes compete in the Wartburg College Pentathlon Friday night in Waverly. The Eagles' Leeanne Nowicki finished third overall while Maggie May was fourth, Megan Nitka fifth, Kat Barkhahn sixth and Jena Weigel seventh.

Nowicki placed third with 2,904 points while May finished fourth with 2,615. Nitka recorded 2,339 points while Barkhahn finished with 2,246 and Weigel 2,228.

Wartburg's Brittany Melloy won the pentathlon with 3,166 points and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships. The Knights' Rebecca Fagerlind was second with 2,975 points.

UW-L scored 20 team points while Wartburg finished with 18.

May captured the pentathlon 55-meter hurdles Friday (9.11) while Barkhahn captured the shot put (37-3). Nowicki tied for first in the high jump (5-2 1/4) while placing second in the 55-meter hurdles (9.14) and long jump (15-6 3/4).

UW-L returns to action Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Wartburg Invitational at 11 a.m.

UW-L’s athletic teams sport a contemporary Eagle in the L and caricature created in 1989. Dave Christianson, a 1973 art major graduate, penned the images after the UW-L men’s teams took the Eagles moniker. Women’s teams started sporting the Eagles moniker in November 1990.
