Dorn and Farwell Win Titles at UW-Eau Claire Invite

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team placed second at the 32nd Annual UW-Eau Claire Invitational Saturday night in the McPhee Physical Education Center. The Eagles finished with 149.5 team points while Augsburg College (Minn.) won the team title with 221. UW-Parkside was third (126), St. John's University, Minn. fourth (109) and UW-Oshkosh fifth (93). A total of 13 teams scored points.

UW-L's Bobby Dorn and Ryan Farwell each won individual crowns Saturday. Dorn won by decision (15-13) over UW-Eau Claire's Andy Johnston to win the 149-pound title. Dorn went 4-0 in the invitational.

Farwell captured the 157-pound division with a win by decision (2-0) over John Vaith of St. John's. He went 5-0 overall.

Other finishers for the Eagles included Adam Sheley placing second at 133-pounds; John Poppie second at 197; Grant Miller fourth at 174-; Jonny Brennan fifth at 133 and Jay Milz fifth at 157.

Sheley lost to Paul Bjorkstrand of Augsburg by decision (9-7) in the title match at 133-pounds while Poppie lost by technical fall (16-0) to Jared Massey of Augsburg in the 197-pound championship match.

Miller defaulted to Ryan Woods of UW-Parkside in the third-place match at 174.

Brennan defeated J.T. Rowe of North Central College (Ill.) by decision (13-7) to claim fifth-place at 133-pounds and Milz won by decision (13-9) over Brandon Roehrick of Jamestown College (N.D.) to secure fifth at 157.

UW-L returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 10 at UW-Eau Claire in a dual match at 7 p.m.

UW-L's student-athletes recorded a cumulative grade point average of 3.210 in 2010-11, the highest in the WIAC.  The Eagles also had the highest number of student-athletes, 376, posting grade point averages above 3.000.
