UW-L Finishes 22nd at NCAA's; Relay Earns Honor

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's swimming & diving team finished in 22nd-place after the fourth and final day of competition Saturday night at the 2010 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championships being held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

The Eagles recorded 37.5 team points while Kenyon College (Ohio) won the national title with 696.0 points. Denison University (Ohio) finished second (272.0) wiht Emory University (Ga.) third (259.5), Kalamazoo College (Mich.) fourth (244.0) and Amherst College (Mass.) fifth (217.0). A total of 61 teams scored points.

UW-L's 22nd-place finish is the best in school history since a 16th-place showing in 1993. The Eagles finished a school-best 12th in 1992.

UW-L's 400 freestyle relay of Matt Diehl, Kevin Misener, Ben Knutson and Spencer Loch earned NCAA Division III Honorable Mention All-America honors Saturday with 12th-place finish (3:05.77). 

Diehl ends his career with 10 All-America awards, including five at this year's championships. He was 13th in the 100 breaststroke (56.86) and a member of the Eagels' 10th-place 200 freestyle relay (1:23.43), 14th-place 200 medley relay (1:33.37) and 15th-place 400 medley relay (3:25.61).  

Loch, Misener and Knutson each picked up their first career All-America honors in 2010. Loch earned four All-America honors while Misener and Knutson each earned two. 

Along with being a member of the 400 freestyle relay, Loch was on UW-L's 200 freestyle relay and 200 and 400 medley relays. 

Misener was on the Eagles' 200 and 400 medley relays while Knutson was a member of the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

In preliminary action Saturday, Loch was 21st in the 100 freestyle (46.06) while Diehl finished 23rd in the 200 breaststroke (2:07.63) and Misener 42nd in the 200 backstroke (2:01.02).

Rich Pein concludes his 28th season as head coach at UW-L in 2009-10. He was named the 2009-10 WIAC Men's Coach of the Year.

Did You Know...
UW-L placed seventh in the 2009-10 NCAA Division III Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings.  It ties the best finish in school history.  The Eagles are one of six institutions in NCAA Division III history to finish in the top-20 all 15 years of the Sports Directors' Cup.
