UW-L Places Seventh; Five Athletes Earn Honors on Final Day

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's swimming & diving team finished in seventh-place after the fourth and final day of competition Saturday night at the 2010 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championships being held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

The Eagles recorded 130.0 team points while Emory University (Ga.) won the national title with 568.5. Denison University (Ohio) placed second (452.0) with Williams College (Mass.) third (367.0), Kenyon College (Ohio) fourth (318.0) and Claremont Mudd-Scripps (Calif.) fifth (177.0). A total of 52 teams scored points.

It is UW-L's seventh top-15 finish in school history, including the best showing since a school-best fifth at the 2004 championships. The 130.0 points this year are the second-most in school history after the Eagles totaled 215.0 in 2004. 

UW-L's Chelsea Hoff and Rachel LaValley earned individual All-America awards Saturday. Hoff was fifth in the 100 freestyle (51.00) while LaValley placed 11th in the 3-meter diving competition (448.10 points). It is the seventh career individual All-America honor for Hoff, including third at the 2010 national meet. She was second in the 100 backstroke (55.98) and fifth in the 50 freestyle (23.26). Hoff was ninth in the 50 freestyle in 2008 and fifth in 2009 and finished second in the 100 backstroke in 2008 and sixth last season.

LaValley picked up her fourth career NCAA III Honorable Mention All-America award Saturday and her second this week. She was 12th in the 1-meter competition (385.00 points) Thursday. LaValley was 13th in the 3-meter and 15th in the 1-meter last season.

Hoff, Danielle Ellingson, Abby Diehl and Katelyn Hartung earned All-America honors Saturday with a sixth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:29.04). 

In preliminary action Saturday, Hartung was 23rd in the 100 freestyle (52.26) while Ellingson finished 23rd in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.90).

Hoff ends her career with 18 All-America accolades while Hartung now has eight, Ellingson six and Diehl three. Along with being a member of Saturday's 400 freestyle relay, Hoff was on the Eagles' third-place 200 freestyle relay (1:34.80) and 10th-place 200 medley relay (1:46.37) this year. 

Hartung was on the Eagles' 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relays as well as 200 medley relay this week to earn All-America honors while Ellingson was a member of UW-L's 400 and 800 freestyle relays. Diehl picked up all three of her career All-America honors in 2010 as a member of the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relays. The Eagles' 800 freestyle relay placed 16th (7:49.65).
