Springfield, Mass. - University of Wisconsin-La Crosse senior
Gabi Hooper captured her third career National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) individual title Saturday afternoon at the 2010 NCGA Championships in the Blake Arena on the campus of Springfield College. She earned the floor exercise with a score of 9.725 after sharing the national title in the vault in 2007 and 2008.
Hooper is the fifth gymnast in school history to win a school record three individual titles, joining
Lisa Kartman,
Kim MacKrille,
Kari Motz and
Nina Schubert. Hooper earned UW-L's first floor exercise championship since
Becky McDonnell won back-to-back titles in 1998 and 1999.
Hooper ends her career with seven NCGA All-America honors. Including the three first-place finishes, she was second on the vault in 2009, second on the balance beam in 2008, second on the floor exercise in 2007 and tied for fourth on the floor exercise in 2009.
She
placed 13th in the all-around (36.450) Friday night in Springfield.
UW-L captured its third consecutive and 14th overall NCGA Championship Friday night in Blake Arena with a season-high team score of 186.775. The Eagles scored 47.075 on the vault; 46.425 on the uneven parallel bars (season-high); 45.750 on the balance beam and 47.525 on the floor exercise.
SUNY-Brockport placed second (186.200) Friday with UW-Whitewater third (184.750). SUNY-Cortland finished fourth (183.425), Springfield College (Mass.) fifth (184.425) and WInona State University (Minn.) sixth (181.950).
It is UW-L's ninth national title in the last 10 years and 11th in the last 14 seasons. The Eagles' 14 overall national crowns are the most in NCGA history.
Barb Gibson completed her 25th season as head coach at UW-L in 2010 and has led the program to all 14 of its NCGA titles. She was honored Saturday as the 2010 NCGA Co-Coach of the Year with John Feeney of SUNY-Brockport. Gibson was also selected the national coach of the year in 1989, 2001, 2005 and 2008.

Kelsey Matula earned a pair of All-America awards Saturday in the individual competition, finishing in a tie for second on the uneven parallel bars (9.300) while placing fifth on the balance beam (9.475). She finishes her career with five NCGA All-America accolades after placing eighth in the all-around and tying for 12th on the uneven parallel bars and floor exercise in 2009.
Sophomores
Courtney Gonzales and
Kahlynn Hunt along with freshman
Kendra Klein earned one All-America accolade Saturday. Gonzales picked up her third career All-America honor with a seventh-place finish on the floor exercise (9.500). She was sixth in the all-around (37.625) Friday night to earn All-America honors and placed fourth on the floor exercise last season.
Gonzales was also 13th on the uneven parallel bars (8.300) and balance beam (8.700) Saturday.
Hunt and Klein earned their first award Saturday. Hunt was seventh on the vault (9.325) while Klein tied for fifth on the floor exercise (9.525).
Freshman
Tegan Oare tied for 13th on the vault (8.900) Saturday while sophomore
Hailey Sommer was 14th on the uneven parallel bars (8.025).
In the individual events Saturday, the first through sixth-place finishers were named first team All-Americans while the seventh through 12th-place finishers earn second team All-American honors.
