Gabi Hooper of
New Brighton, Minn. (Totino-Grace) has earned a berth in the 2010 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Women's Gymnastics Regional Championships. Hooper will compete in the vault Saturday, April 10 at the Salt Lake City (Utah) Regional.
Six teams, five all-around competitors (who are not on a qualifying team) and one individual event specialist per event were named to each of the six regions Monday. Hooper earned the event specialist berth on the vault with a Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 9.6.
The University of Florida, the University of Utah, Auburn University (Ala.), Boise State University (Idaho), The University of Denver (Colo.) and Washington University will compete in the Salt Lake City Regional.
UW-Stout's Meghan Hargens earned one of the five all-around berths and will also compete in Salt Lake City.
Hooper is a two-time National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) champion on the vault, winning the title in 2007 and 2008. She also placed second in 2009. Hooper captured the national championship on the floor exercise this season. She is the fifth gymnast in school history to win a school record three individual titles, joining
Lisa Kartman,
Kim MacKrille,
Kari Motz and
Nina Schubert. Hooper earned UW-L's first floor exercise championship since
Becky McDonnell won back-to-back titles in 1998 and 1999.
Earning seven career NCGA All-America honors, Hooper was second on the balance beam in 2008, second on the floor exercise in 2007 and tied for fourth on the floor exercise in 2009.
Hooper captured a pair of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) titles in 2010, winning the vault and tying for first on the floor exercise. She wrapped up her career with six first-place finishes at the conference championships, winning three times in the vault (2007, 2009, 2010) and twice on the floor exercise (2007, 2010). Hooper also won the league crown on the balance beam (2008).
The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships in Gainesville, Florida, April 22-24. In addition, the event winners at the regional championships will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or the all-around qualifiers.
Along with Salt Lake City, Utah, the cities of Los Angeles, California; Columbia, Missouri; Lexington, Kentucky; University Park, Pennsylvania; and Morgantown, West Virginia will host regionals April 10 starting at 6 p.m. local time.
