Six Wrestlers Advance to National Quarterfinals

Cedar Rapids, Iowa - Six University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestlers have advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2010 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championships Friday afternoon at the U.S. Cellular Center. The Eagles are tied for fourth after the first session with 13 team points. Coe College (Iowa) leads with 19 points while Augsburg College (Minn.) and Wartburg College (Iowa) are tied for second with 14.0. Delaware Valley College (Pa.) is also tied fourth with 13.

Junior Albie McKinney (125-pounds), sophomore Bebeto Yewah (133), junior Matt Mauseth (149), sophomore Mike Schmitz (174), senior Andy Moore (197) and senior Dan Laurent (285) have all advanced to the quarterfinals Friday at 6 p.m. Junior Cory Ferguson (165) will compete in the consolation second round Friday night after his first round loss.

McKinney, unseeded in the tournament, earned an 9-6 victory over second-seeded Mark Kist of Wartburg College (Iowa) at 125-pounds. Kist placed third at the 2009 national championshps. McKinney advances to take on seventh-seeded Joshua Roberts of Augsburg College (Minn.) in the quarterfinals Friday. McKinney improves to 23-8 on the season. He is making his second career appearance at the national championships after going 1-2 in 2009.

Yewah, the top seed at 133-pounds, won by fall (1:47) over Heidelberg University's Tom D'Alessandro. Yewah, competing in his first national tournament, is now 21-1 on the season. He advances to the quarterfinals and faces William Livingston of Centenary College (N.J.).

Mauseth opened defense of his 149-pound title with a win by major decision (15-2) over Coe College's (Iowa) Mark Carey. Mauseth, making his third career appearance in the national championships, improves to 26-3 on the season. He is seeded fourth this year. Along with winning the national crown in 2009, Mauseth earned NCAA III All-America honors with a sixth-place finish in 2008. Mauseth will wrestle fifth-seeded Isaac Dukes of Case Western Reserve (Ohio) in the quarterfinals.

Schmitz advanced to the 174-pound quarterfinals with a win by fall (1:22) over Wesleyan University's (Ct.) Gregory Hurd. Schmitz, seeded third in the tournament, is making his second career appearance at the national meet. He earned All-America accolades in 2009 with a fourth-place finish. With Friday's first round win, Schmitz improves to 29-5 on the season.

Moore will compete in the quarterfinals at 197-pounds after receiving a first round bye. He is seeded third in NCAA Division III with a record of 15-2. Moore is appearing in his second national tournament after placing fourth last season and earning All-America honors.

Laurent, the two-time defending champion at 285-pounds, advanced to Friday's quarterfinals with a 5-2 win over Brock Glotfelty of McDaniel (Md.). Laurent, seeded third this year, is now 30-3 on the season. Along with winning national titles in 2008 and 2009, Laurent finished 1-2 in 2007. He will face sixth-seeded Adam Sutter of Lakeland (Wis.) in the quarterfinals.

Ferguson fell by major decision (16-4) to Coe College's (Iowa) Nick LeClere at 165-pounds in the first round Friday. Ferguson, making his second tournament berth, is now 19-3 on the season. He went 0-2 in the 2009 NCAA III Championships.

UW-L finished third at the 2009 NCAA Division III Championships. The Eagles scored 87.0 points as five wrestlers earned All-America accolades. Wartburg College (Iowa) captured last year's NCAA III title with 117.5 points while Augsburg College (Minn.) was second with 105.0.
