UW-L Wins Third Straight with Victory over Luther

- The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's tennis squad earned its 10th dual victory on the season with an 8-1 win over Luther College (Iowa) Saturday afternoon in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles, winners of three straight overall, improve to 10-2 on the season while the Norse drop to 12-4.

UW-L won five of six singles matches Saturday. Joey Van Lieshout defeated Scott Martin at No. 1 (6-0, 6-2); Nick Piotrowski beat Joseph LaFountaine at No. 2 (6-4, 6-4) and Nathan Fekete defeated Samriddh Burman at No. 3 (5-7, 7-5, 11-9).

The Eagles' Steven Quiring earned the win at No. 4 singles over Nicholas Mozena (5-2, retired). Luther's Tyler Zinnecker defeated UWL's Jon Mahvi at No. 5 singles (6-2, 1-6, 10-8) and the Eagles' Taylor Schliewe defeated Nate Jung at No. 6 singles (1-6, 6-1, 10-6).

UWL took all three doubles matches with Van Lieshout/Piotrowski winning at No. 1 over Burman/Mozena (8-5). Fekete/Quiring defeated Zinnecker/Martin at No. 2 (8-3) while Paul Vickers/Sam Talarczyk beat Tyler Van Heest/Jung at No. 3 doubles (8-4).

UW-L returns to action Sunday, March 14 in Orlando, Florida with two matches. The Eagles face Birmingham-Southern College (Ala.) and Illinois Wesleyan University.

UW-L’s athletic teams sport a contemporary Eagle in the L and caricature created in 1989. Dave Christianson, a 1973 art major graduate, penned the images after the UW-L men’s teams took the Eagles moniker. Women’s teams started sporting the Eagles moniker in November 1990.
