Three Athletes Win Titles; Relay Automatically Qualifies

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's track & field team competed at the Pointer Qualifier Saturday afternoon at UW-Stevens Point. No team scores were recorded. The Eagles'  Dave Stauder, Dave Pergande and Isaac Vazquez each captured individual crowns Saturday while UW-L's 4x400-meter relay automatically qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships.

The 4x400-meter relay won with a time of 3:16.93. Stauder took the high jump (6-8 3/4), Pergande the pole vault (16-1 3/4) and Vazquez the triple jump (47-7 3/4). All three provisionally qualified for the national championships with their marks.

Vazquez was also fourth in the long jump (22-4 1/4).

UW-L's Kellen McCrary tied for second in the triple jump (46-9 1/2) while Brett Davis was fourth (45-5 3/4). Davis also finished 13th in the long jump (21-2 3/4). McCrary met provisional qualifying status.

In the shot put, the Eagles' Andy Novak placed third (52-4 1/2), Bill Warren fifth (51-7 1/4) and Adam Poellinger seventh (50-2 3/4) with Novak and Warren privsionally qualifying for the NCAA III Championships.

On the track, Zach Lee provisionally qualified for the national meet with a second-place finish in the 55-meter dash and a time of 6.44. Pat Bryan was sixth (7.89) and Scott Spexarth seventh (7.92) in the 55-meter hurdles.

Bruce Schmitz finished third (4:20.43) and McCauley Kraker sixth (4:26.94) in the mile run while Ryan Mendez was ninth in the 400-meter dash (50.68).

UW-L returns to action Friday, March 12 at the NCAA III Championships in Greencastle, Ind.

UW-L's student-athletes recorded a cumulative grade point average of 3.210 in 2010-11, the highest in the WIAC.  The Eagles also had the highest number of student-athletes, 376, posting grade point averages above 3.000.
