Eagles Split Doubleheader at Augsburg

Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Augsburg College (Minn.) at the Auggie Dome Tournament at Edor Nelson Field. The Eagles won the opener 4-0 before the Auggies came back to win game two, 4-3. UW-L is now 5-1 on the season while Augsburg is 3-1.

In the opener, Heather Schultz picked up the win. She went 7.0 innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out eight.

The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the fifth as Jenna Ahnen hit a two-run home run. Rachel Croak had singled earlier in the inning and scored on Ahnen's first home run of the season. UW-L made it 4-0 in the sixth inning with Lauren Schaller hitting an RBI double to knock in pinch-runner Cheri Pertzborn. Croak followed with an RBI groundout to score Katie Pietrowiak.

Ahnen finished 3-for-4 in the game with two RBI and a run scored.

Melissa Larsen took the loss for Augsburg, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing eight hits, four runs and three walks. She finished with two strikeouts.

In the second game, the Auggies tallied two runs in the first and second innings to lead 4-0. Jessa Hinz and Shawna Middleton each scored a run with an RBI single. The Ealges cut the lead to 4-2 in the second as Natalie Stoll had an RBI groundout scoring Kelsey Golackson and Croak had an RBI single to score Pietrowiak.

UW-L cut the deficit to 4-3 in the fifth with Stoll hitting an RBI single to knock in Golackson.

Ashley Veroeven took the loss for UW-L, pitching 1.2 innings, allowing five hits, four runs and one walk while striking out three. Lacey Probst went 5.1 innings, allowing two hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Stoll finished 1-for-4 with two RBI while Schaller was 3-for-4. Golackson scored two runs.

Kylee Persing earned the win for Augsburg, going 4.1 innings, allowing five hits, three runs and seven walks. She had two strikeouts. Larsen picked up the save, going 2.2 innings, allowing two hits and one walk.

UW-L returns to action Saturday, March 6 against Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) at 8 a.m. in Minneapolis.

Did You Know...
UW-L's student-athletes recorded a cumulative grade point average of 3.210 in 2010-11, the highest in the WIAC.  The Eagles also had the highest number of student-athletes, 376, posting grade point averages above 3.000.
