Mauseth Finishes Third; Moore Fourth at NCAA III Championships
Yewah, Schmitz and Laurent Advance to Finals

Cedar Rapids, Iowa - University of Wisconsin-La Crosse junior Matt Mauseth earned his third career All-America honor with a third-place finish at 149-pounds Saturday afternoon at the 2010 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championships at the U.S. Cellular Center. Mauseth earned a 5-2 victory over top-seeded Blaine Woszczak of Ithaca College (N.Y.) in the third-place match.
Senior Andy Moore finished fourth Saturday at 197-pounds after a 4-3 loss to top-seed Jared Massey of Augsburg College (Minn.) in the third-place match while junior Cory Ferguson placed eighth at 165-pounds after losing by fall (:41) to second-seeded Carrington Banks of Wartburg College (Iowa) in the seventh-place match.
Moore earns his second NCAA III All-America award after also finishing fourth in 2009. It is the first All-America recognition for Ferguson.
Sophomores Bebeto Yewah (133-pounds) and Mike Schmitz (174) and senior Dan Laurent (285) have all advanced to the title matches beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday.
UW-L is in second-place after Saturday's third session with 88.5 team points. Augsburg College (Minn.) leads with 110.5. Wartburg College (Iowa) is third (79.5) followed by Coe College (Iowa) in fourth (71.0) and Delaware Valley College (Pa) is fifth (50.5).
Mauseth, seeded fourth, went 3-0 Saturday and 5-1 overall in this year's championships. He finishes 30-4 on the season. Mauseth defeated Elmhurst College's (Ill.) Charlie Curran by decision (9-4) and Luther College's (Iowa) Jason Pyle by decision (8-4) Saturday. Pyle was the tournament's third-seed. Mauseth opened the tournament Friday with a win by major decision (15-2) over Coe College's (Iowa) Mark Carey. He then lost by decision (18-11) to Case Western Reserve University's (Ohio) fifth-seeded Isaac Dukes in the quarterfinals, but came back to win (3-2) over seventh-seeded Jacob Groth of Wartburg College (Iowa) in the consolation round.
The defending national champion at 149-pounds, Mauseth also earned NCAA III All-America honors with a sixth-place finish in 2008.
Moore, seeded third in the tournament, went 2-2 overall this weekend and finishes the year at 17-4. He fell in the 197-pound semifinals Saturday morning with a 6-0 loss to second-seeded Ryan Malo of Williams College (Mass.), but came back to earn a 3-1 overtime victory over Martin Porter of Delaware Valley College (Pa.). Moore earned an 6-4 win over sixth-seeded Bill Schindel of Mt. Union College (Ohio) in the quarterfinals after receiving a first-round bye Friday. Moore was appearing in his second national tournament.
Ferguson went 0-2 Saturday and 2-3 overall in this year's meet to earn his first career NCAA III All-America honor. He finishes the year at 21-5 overall. Ferguson lost in the consolation semifinals Saturday by decision (7-6) to fourth-seed Michael Moran of Southern Maine University. He went 2-1 in Friday's action, losing by major decision (16-4) to third-seeded Nick LeClere of Coe College (Iowa) in the first round, but came back to win two straight matches to earn All-America honors. Ferguson won by fall (4:36) over Trent Zempel of Messiah College (Pa.) and by fall (2:09) over eighth-seeded Matt Curley of Heidelberg University (Ohio). Making his second career tournament berth, Ferguson went 0-2 in the 2009 NCAA III Championships.
Yewah, the top-seed at 133-pounds, earned a 5-3 win over fifth-seeded Chad Winowich of Ithaca College (N.Y.) in Saturday morning's semifinals. Yewah will take on third-seeded Paul Bjorkstrand of Augsburg College (Minn.) in the national championship match Saturday night.
Yewah went 2-0 in Friday's action, winning by fall (1:47) over Heidelberg University's (Ohio) Tom D'Alessandro in his opening match and winning by fall (6:15) over William Livingston of Centenary College (N.J.) in Friday's quarterfinals. Competing in his first national tournament, Yewah is now 23-1 on the season.
Schmitz, seeded third, advanced to the 174-pound title match with a 5-2 win over second-seeded Zach Molitor of Augsburg College (Minn.) in Saturday's semifinals. The match was tied 2-2 with Molitor needing one more second to gain the riding time advantage, but Schmitz escaped with under :30 remaining and then recorded a two-point takedown in the final seconds to earn the win. He will face top seed and defending NCAA Division III champion Evan Brown of the University of Dubuque (Iowa) in the championship.
Schmitz advanced to the semifinals with a 6-1 decision win over Cowan Brown of North Central College (Ill.) in Friday's quarterfinals. He had advanced to the quarterfinals with a win by fall (1:22) over Wesleyan University's (Ct.) Gregory Hurd in the first round. Schmitz is making his second career appearance at the national meet. He earned All-America accolades in 2009 with a fourth-place finish. Schmitz is now 31-5 on the season.
Laurent, the two-time defending champion at 285-pounds, advanced to the title match with an 8-4 victory over second-seeded Kyle Bilquist of Delaware Valley College (Pa.). Bilquist had won the previous three meetings between the two. Laurent will face fifth-seeded John Helgerson of Wartburg College (Iowa) for the championship.
Laurent advanced to the semifinals with a 2-0 victory over sixth-seeded Adam Sutter of Lakeland College (Wis.) in the quarterfinals Friday. The third-seed this year, Laurent earned a 5-2 win over Brock Glotfelty of McDaniel (Md.) in the opening round. Laurent is now 32-3 on the season. Along with winning national titles in 2008 and 2009, Laurent finished 1-2 in 2007.
The six All-America honors for UW-L are tied for the third-most in school history. UW-L also had six awards in 2007 and 2008. The Eagles finished with a school record seven NCAA Division III All-America honors in 2005 and 2006.
Finals begin at 7 p.m. Saturday.
