UW-L Sweeps Doubleheader with Concordia-Moorhead

Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team improved to 7-1 on the season with a non-conference doubleheader sweep of Concordia-Moorhead University (Minn.) Saturday morning at the Auggie Dome Tournament at Edor Nelson Field. The Eagles won the opener, 11-0 in five innings, and the nightcap, 15-3. Concordia-Moorhead is now 2-13 overall.

In the opener, Heather Schultz and Ashley Veroeven combined on the four-hit shutout. Schultz earned the win, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing four hits while striking out three. Veroeven went 1.0 inning with three strikeouts.

The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on Jenna Ahnen's two-run home run. Ahnen added an RBI on a bunt in the third inning and UW-L scored five times in the top of the fourth for an 8-0 lead. Katie Keyes hit a two-run home run, Rachel Croak had an RBI single and Rachel Weyer and Ahnen each recorded run-scoring doubles.

UW-L's Nicole Holmes had a two-run single in the fifth and Weyer added an RBI on a Cobbers' error.

Croak finished 4-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI while Ahnen was 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored. Keyes finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.

In the nightcap, UW-L scored a pair of runs in the first and second innings to lead 4-0. Cara Salm had an RBI bunt in the first while Katie Pietrowiak added an RBI on a sacrifice bunt in the second. Croak later added an RBI single in the second inning.

UW-L tallied five runs on seven hits in the third inning. Salm, Lauren Schaller, Pietrowiak and Weyer each had run-scoring singles. Concordia-Moorhead scored a pair of runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 9-2. Each team scored a run in the sixth before the Eagles scored five runs in the seventh. Salm, Schaller, Veroeven and Kelsey Golackson each had an RBI.

Lacey Probst earned the win, going 5.0 innings, allowing five hits, two runs and one walk with three strikeouts. Courtney Hoeg pitched 1.0 inning, allowing one hit and one run while Veroeven went 1.0 inning with three strikeouts.

Schaller went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI while Golackson finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Salm had three RBI while Croak and Pietrowiak each had two RBI. UW-L had 16 hits in the game.

UW-L returns to action Sunday, March 14 against Southwestern University (Texas) in Tucson, Arizona at 11 a.m

UW-L’s athletic teams sport a contemporary Eagle in the L and caricature created in 1989. Dave Christianson, a 1973 art major graduate, penned the images after the UW-L men’s teams took the Eagles moniker. Women’s teams started sporting the Eagles moniker in November 1990.
