UW-L Drops City Match-Up with Viterbo

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team fell 6-3 to city-rival Viterbo University Thursday night at Copeland Park in the 7th Annual Copeland Cup. The Eagles drop to 14-18 on the season while the V-Hawks improve to 26-16-1. UW-L now leads the all-time series, 19-17, including 4-3 in the Copeland Cup.

Viterbo took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Eli Tupuola walked with one out and Brandon Buelow followed with a two-run home run. The V-Hawks added two more runs in the bottom of the second on Buelow's two-run single.

Justin Daniels had an RBI triple in the third to make it 5-0 and he added a solo home run in the fifth.

UW-L cut the lead to 6-3 on Ryan Steinhoff's three-run home run in the top of the eighth. Jay Fanta singled with two outs to start the Eagles' rally and Lance Poppy followed with another single before Steinhoff's home run.

Steven Mora earned the win for Viterbo, pitching 7.2 innings, allowing seven hits, three runs and four walks with eight strikeouts. Brett Moravec picked up the save, going 1.0 inning.

Kevin Johnson (1-1) suffered the loss for UW-L. He went 6.0 innings, allowing 10 hits, six runs (three earned) and three walks while striking out two.

The Eagles committed five errors in the contest.

Fanta finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored while Matt Johnson was 2-for-3.

Buelow was 2-for-5 for Viterbo with four RBI while Daniels went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run.

UW-L travels to UW-Stevens Point for a pair of WIAC doubleheaders Saturday-Sunday, May 1-2. Action starts at noon each day.

UW-L's student-athletes recorded a cumulative grade point average of 3.210 in 2010-11, the highest in the WIAC.  The Eagles also had the highest number of student-athletes, 376, posting grade point averages above 3.000.
