UW-L Hosts Eagle Open; Three Athletes Win Titles

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's track & field team hosted the Eagle Open Friday night at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. No team scores were recorded. Three individual won titles for the Eagles, including Pat Bryan, David Stauder and Isaac Vazquez.

Bryan took the 110-meter hurdles (15.21) while Stauder captured the high jump (6-7) and Vazquez the triple jump (48-4). Vazquez provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships with his winning mark.

UW-L also won the 4x100 (42.47) and 4x400 (3:14.78) relays with the 4x400 provisionally qualifying.

Other top finishes on the track included Eric Smits third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:01.39), Scott Spexarth (15.28) third and Luke Ackerson fourth (15.52) in the 110-meter hurdles. The Eagles' Mike Olenek finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (57.62) while Jared Sitte was fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.19) and Ryan Mendez fifth in the 400-meter dash (50.74).

In the field events, Nick Stone placed second in the high jump (6-5) while Vazquez was second in the long jump (22-8 1/4) to go along with his win in the triple jump. Kellen McCrary finished second in the triple jump (48-0 3/4) while Brett Davis was third in the triple jump (46-6 1/4) and fifth in the long jump (21-4 1/4). McCrary met provisionally qualifying standards in the triple jump.

The Eagles' Bill Warren was second in the shot put (53-0 1/4) while Jake Schultz placed third in the javelin (134-10) and Andy Novak finished fifth in the shot put (51-11 1/4). Warren provisionally qualified for the NCAA III Championships.

UW-L returns to action Thursday, May 20 hosting the UW-L Qualifier at 4 p.m.

UW-L placed seventh in the 2009-10 NCAA Division III Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings.  It ties the best finish in school history.  The Eagles are one of six institutions in NCAA Division III history to finish in the top-20 all 15 years of the Sports Directors' Cup.
