UW-L Hosts Eagle Open; Perleberg Wins 5,000

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's track & field team hosted the Eagle Open Friday night at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. No team scores were recorded. UW-L's Stephanie Perleberg captured the 5,000-meter run and automatically qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships with her time of 16:43.38.

The Eagles' 4x100-meter relay also automatically qualified for the national meet with a second-place finish and time of 46.94. UW-L's 4x400-meter relay placed fourth with an NCAA III provisional time of 3:54.73.

Other top finishes on the track included Ashton May placing second in the 100-meter dash (12.39) while Kailey Charlton was third in the 200-meter dash (25.56).

Jenna Starck was second in the 100-meter hurdles (15.66) while Rachel Boldt placed third in the 5,000-meter run (18:55.78). The Eagles' Megan Johnson was third (11:34.39), Kelsey Heinz fourth (11:58.63) and Abby Gustafson fifth (12:03.35) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

In the field events, UW-L's Kayla Johnson was second in the javelin throw (99-2) while Amy Jo Garringer placed fifth (91-1). Garringer was also fourth in the long jump (15-9 3/4) while Starck was third (16-1 1/2). Megan Marfilius placed fourth in the high jump (5-2 1/4) and Kaitlyn Joyce fifth in the pole vault (11-2 1/4).

UW-L returns to action Thursday, May 20 hosting the UW-L Qualifier at 4 p.m.

UW-L placed seventh in the 2009-10 NCAA Division III Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings.  It ties the best finish in school history.  The Eagles are one of six institutions in NCAA Division III history to finish in the top-20 all 15 years of the Sports Directors' Cup.
