La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team wrapped up its regular season with a doubleheader sweep of UW-Eau Claire Sunday afternoon at North Campus Field. The Eagles won the opener, 7-4, and the nightcap, 5-4. UW-L improves to 32-6 overall and finishes the year at 16-0 in the WIAC. UW-Eau Claire is now 19-19 overall and 11-5 in the conference.
With its two victories Sunday, UW-L extended its winning streak to a school record 18 games.
In the opener,
Heather Schultz (19-2) earned the win for UW-L. She went 5.0 innings, allowing five hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks while striking out two.
Ashley Veroeven went 2.0 innings, allowing three hits and one run with two strikeouts.
UW-Eau Claire took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on Aleisha Harper's RBI single and Kaity Acker's RBI double. UW-L scored three times in the bottom of the inning to take its first lead of the day.
Rachel Weyer and
Jenna Ahnen had RBI singles while Weyer scored on a Blugolds' error.
After the Blugolds tied the game in the top of the fifth, the Eagles tallied four runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Natalie Stoll had a two-run double while
Kelsey Golackson had an RBI double and
Katie Pietrowiak added a run-scoring single.
UW-Eau Claire finished the scoring with a run in the top of the seventh on a run-scoring double from Emily Muller.
Weyer, Ahnen, Pietrowiak and
Lauren Schaller each had two hits for UW-L while Stoll had two RBI.
Kassie Krummel (7-8) suffered the loss for UW-Eau Claire. She pitched 3.0 innings, allowing six hits and four runs with a strikeout. Harper was 3-for-4 with a run scored.
In the nightcap,
Lacey Probst (7-3) earned the victory while Veroeven picked up her third save. Probst went 5.0 innings, allowing four hits, four runs (two earned) and one walk while striking out three. Veroeven pitched 2.0 innings with two walks and a strikeout.
UW-Eau Claire scored three runs in the top of the second with Jess Freagon having a two-run double and Emily Haluska an RBI single. UW-L cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third on Weyer's single to score Rachel Croak. After the Blugolds took a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth, the Eagles scored four runs in the bottom of the inning. Veroeven and Golackson each had two-run singles to give UW-L a 5-4 lead.
Croak, Ahnen and
Cara Salm each had two hits in the second game for UW-L.
Jess Hegseth (4-8) took the loss, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing 11 hits and five runs. Freagon was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.
UW-L returns to action Friday, May 7 at the WIAC Tournament at UW-Oshkosh. The Eagles, the top-seed for the tournament, will face the sixth-seed at 10 a.m.
