Swimming & Diving Teams Announce Award Winners

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's and women's swimming & diving teams have announced its awards for the 2009-10 season. The Eagles' men's and women's squads each finished second at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships this season. Head coach Rich Pein was selected the WIAC Men's Swimming & Diving Coach of the Year.

UW-L's men's team was 22nd at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championships, its best finish since placing 16th in 1993. The women's team finished seventh at the 2010 national meet, its best finish since a fifth-place showing in 2004.

Senior Matt Diehl of Prairie du Sac (Sauk Prairie) was named UW-L's Most Valuable Male this season while sophomore Spencer Loch of Madison (Memorial) and freshman Kevin Misener of Verona (H.S.) were selected Most Improve Male.

Diehl was named the WIAC Male Swimmer of the Meet at this year's conference championships. He took first in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley while finishing second in the 200 breaststroke and 200 medley relay. Diehl was also a member of UW-L's winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays. He earned five NCAA All-America honors at this year's championships.

Loch won the 50 and 100 freestyle at the 2010 WIAC Championships and a member of the first-place 200 and 400 freestyle relays. He also placed second as a member of the 200 medley relay and earned four All-America honors in 2010. Misener was on the Eagles' winning 400 freestyle relay at the WIAC Championships and placed second individually in the 500 freestyle. He was on UW-L's second-place 800 freestyle and 400 medley relays. Misener earned two NCAA III All-America recognitions.

Juniors Casey Borden of Brookfield (Central), Colin Schmidt of Madison (La Follette) and Bill Shuster of Glendale (Nicolet) were named team captains for 2010-11. Borden was on UW-L's second-place 200 medley relay at the 2010 WIAC Championships and also earned one All-America award.

Senior Chelsea Hoff of Middleton (H.S.) was named Most Valuable Female this year while freshman Sarah Kisiolek of Kiel (H.S.) and sophomore Emily Schweitz of Fox Point (Nicolet) were selected Most Improved Female.

Hoff was selected the WIAC Female Swimmer of the Meet in 2010 for the third straight season. She won the 50 freestyle and 100 and 200 backstroke at the conference meet as well as being a member of UW-L's first-place 200 and 400 freestyle relays and 200 medley relay. Hoff, also named the WIAC Women's Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete, was on the second-place 400 medley relay.

Hoff earned six All-America honors in 2010, including three individually.

Juniors Jennifer Bryson of Appleton (North), Katelyn Hartung of Madison (Memorial) and Samantha Koch of New Berlin (West) were named team captains for next season.

Hartung won the 100 and 200 freestyle at this year's WIAC Championships and was a member of the first-place 200 and 400 freestyle and 200 medley relays. She was on the Eagles' second-place 800 freestyle relay and earned four All-America honors.

Junior Rachel LaValley of Eau Claire (Memorial) was named the 2010 WIAC Female Diver of the Meet after winning the one-meter and three-meter competition. It was the second consecutive year she earned the honor. LaValley also earned two All-America awards this year.
