Berea, Ohio - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's track & field team is tied for fourth-place after the first day of competition Thursday at the 2010 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Outdoor Championships. The championships are taking place at Tressel Field at Finnie Stadium at Baldwin-Wallace College.
The Eagles have 10.0 team points. North Central College (Ill.) leads the championships with 41.0 points while Rowan University (N.J.) is second with 14.0 and Massachusetts Institute of Technology is third with 13.0. UW-L, the University of St. Thomas (Minn.), Concordia University (Wis.) and California Lutheran University are tied for fourth with 10.0. Rochester Institute of Technology (N.Y.), Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Calif.) and Carthage College (Wis.) are tied for eighth with 8.0 points.
UW-L's
Kellen McCrary and
Isaac Vazquez each earned NCAA Division III All-America honors in the long jump Thursday. McCrary placed second overall (23-7 1/2) while Vazquez finished seventh (23-2 1/2). It is the second career All-America award for both student-athletes, including their first outdoors. McCrary captured the long jump at the 2010 NCAA III Indoor Track & Field Championships while Vazquez was eighth in the triple jump.
"We knew what we needed to do and with the big marks put up in the competition if feels great to score points for the team," said McCrary. "It is very exciting to do what we did and put some points on the board when we we not supposed to score," added Vazquez.
"Two guys on the podium, scoring points when they were not predicted to, and simply competing when it counts speaks for itself," said assistant coach
Nick Kohl. Both will compete in the triple jump Saturday at this year's championships.
The Eagles' 4x400-meter relay of
Paul Yerhot,
Ryan Mendez,
Tyson Young and
Aric Hoeschen advanced to Saturday's final with a preliminary time of 3:13.65 Thursday afternoon. The relay had the fourth-fastest qualifying time.
UW-L's 4x100-meter relay of
Jared Sitte, Yerhot,
Josh Jackson and Vazquez failed to qualify for Saturday's final after running 41.89 Thursday.
Paul Moran placed 14th (32:38.55) in the 10,000-meter run Thursday.
Dave Pergande competed in the pole vault Thursday, but did not record a height.
