Three Athletes Win Titles; UW-L Leads WIAC Championships

River Falls, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's track & field team leads after the first day of competition at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships Friday afternoon at the Ramer Field Athletic Complex.

The Eagles have 75.0 team points while UW-Oshkosh is second with 52.0. UW-Stevens Point is third (37.0) followed by UW-Whitewater (33.0); UW-Eau Claire (29.0); UW-Platteville (26.0); UW-Stout (17.0); UW-Superior (2.0) and UW-River Falls (2.0).

UW-L's Dave Pergande, Kellen McCrary and Paul Moran each won individual conference titles Friday. Pergande took the pole vault (15-5) while McCrary won the long jump (23-6 3/4) and Moran the 10,000-meter run (31:16.40). McCrary set a facility record in winning the long jump.

Isaac Vazquez placed second (22-11 3/4) and Brett Davis fifth (22-5) in the long jump for the Eagles Friday while Andy Grossman was third in the javelin throw (166-4). Aaron Johnson finished fifth in the hammer throw (179-11).

On the track, Brian Shonat was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:35.26). Sean Harrington finished third (31:28.71) and Michael Behringer fourth (31:30.69) in the 10,000-meter run.

Action concludes Saturday at UW-River Falls.

UW-L's student-athletes recorded a cumulative grade point average of 3.210 in 2010-11, the highest in the WIAC.  The Eagles also had the highest number of student-athletes, 376, posting grade point averages above 3.000.
