May and Perleberg Win Titles; UW-L Leads WIAC Championships

River Falls, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's track & field team leads after the first day of competition at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships Friday afternoon at the Ramer Field Athletic Complex.

The Eagles have 66.5 team points while UW-Oshkosh is second with 65.5. UW-Eau Claire is third (40.0) followed by UW-Stevens Point (30.0); UW-River Falls (23.0); UW-Whitewater (20.0); UW-Platteville (16.0); UW-Stout (12.0) and UW-Superior (0.0).

In Friday's action, UW-L's Ashton May and Stephanie Perleberg both captured individual league crowns. May won the long jump (18-3) while Perleberg captured the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:41.90). Perleberg set a facility record with her winning time.

The Eagles' Kaitlyn Joyce was second in the pole vault (11-2 1/4) Friday while Stephanie Peters tied for fourth (11-2 1/4). Sheila Opelt was fourth in the long jump (17-6) and Kayla Johnson finished fifth in the javelin throw (105-1).

On the track, Megan Johnson was fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:15.20). UW-L's Katelynn Williams was second (38:22.76) and Rachel Boldt fourth (38:31.55) in the 10,000-meter run.

UW-L's 4x800-meter relay placed third Friday (9:31.85).

Action concludes Saturday at UW-River Falls.

UW-L's student-athletes recorded a cumulative grade point average of 3.210 in 2010-11, the highest in the WIAC.  The Eagles also had the highest number of student-athletes, 376, posting grade point averages above 3.000.
