UW-La Crosse 9, UW-Oshkosh 8 (10 innings)
La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse finished its season with a doubleheader split with UW-Oshkosh Sunday afternoon at North Campus Field. The Eagles dropped the opener, 11-7, but came back to win the nightcap, 9-8 in 10 innings. UW-L finishes the year at 17-23 overall and 9-15 in the WIAC while UW-Oshkosh falls to 18-20 overall and 11-13 in the conference.
Matt Trocke hit a two-out walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th to give the Eagles the victory in game two Sunday afternoon.
Matt Johnson opened the inning with a single and after
Adam Cordova struck out on a third strike bunt attempt,
Corey Geary sacrificed Johnson to second on a bunt. Trocke then singled to center field to score the winning run.
UW-O took an 8-7 lead in the top of the eighth on Mickey Fadness' two-out two-run single to knock in Nolan Fadness and Blake Berger. UW-L tied the contest in the bottom of the ninth. Trocke opened the frame with a double and after
Jay Fanta popped up to the third base,
Lance Poppy singled to center to score Geary.
Fanta hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to give UW-L a 7-6 lead.
The contest was tied 6-6 after two innings. Mickey Fadness had a two-run double in the first for the Titans while Cordova hit a lead-off home run for the Eagles in the bottom of the inning. After UW-Oshkosh scored three runs in the second to take a 6-2 lead, UW-L tallied four runs in the bottom of the inning. Geary had a fielder's choice to score a run while Fanta and Poppy had run-scoring singles.
Zach Lauersdorf (4-4) earned the win for UW-L. He pitched 8.2 innings in relief of starter
Steve Henes. Lauersdorf allowed seven hits, two runs and three walks while striking out six.
Trocke finished 4-for-6 in the nightcap with two runs and an RBI. Fanta and Poppy each had two two hits and two RBI while Geary had two hits and scored twice.
Troy Mrkvicka (2-3) suffered the loss, pitching 8.0 innings, allowing nine hits, three runs and one walk with four strikeouts. Mickey Fadness was 3-for-5 with four RBI while Derek Hiroskey finished 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI. Nolan Fadness scored three runs.
Kyle Kannenberg (8-6) pitched a complete-game victory for UW-Oshkosh in the opener. He went 9.0 innings, allowing 14 hits, seven runs (six earned) and two walks with two strikeouts. Kannenberg also finished 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI. Hiroskey was 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI while Tyler Kamps, Berger and Mickey Fadness each had two hits.
Each team scored twice in the first inning with Trocke hitting a two-run home for UW-L. After the Eagles took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth on Cordova's fielder's choice, UW-Oshkosh scored two runs in the fifth on RBI singles from Mickey Fadness and Hiroskey. Poppy tied the game for the Eagles with a run-scoring single in the fifth and UW-L took a 6-4 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Cordova had an RBI double and Trocke an RBI single.
UW-Oshkosh scored four times in the seventh with Kannenberg hitting a go-ahead two-run home run to make it 7-6. Lucas Wirth had a two-run single in the eighth for the Titans. Fanta finished the scoring with an RBI ground out in the eighth inning.
Garrett Scray (2-3) suffered the loss for UW-L, pitching 6.2 innings. He allowed 10 hits, eight runs (six earned) and three walks with two strikeouts. Geary was 4-for-5 with a run scored while Trocke finished 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI. Cordova was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
