Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team split a doubleheader at UW-Whitewater Saturday afternoon at Prucha Field at Jim Miller Stadium. The Eagles won the opener, 3-1, before the Warhawks took the nightcap, 1-0 in 13 innings. UW-L finishes its regular season at 24-15 overall and 12-12 in the WIAC while UW-Whitewater improves 29-9 overall and 18-6 in the conference.
The Warhawks are ranked 11th in the American Baseball Coaches Association Poll.
Brett Jacobson's two-run single in the top of the ninth gave UW-L the win in the opener.
Zach Harazin's opened the ninth with a single and after a strikeout,
Corey Geary and
Jay Fanta also singled to load the bases. Jacobson then delivered his game-winning hit.
UW-L took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on
Brooks Braga's single to knock in
Matt Johnson.
UW-Whitewater tied the game in the bottom of the eighth as Brent Young was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded.
Zach Lauersdorf earned the win, pitching 1.2 innings with one strikeout.
Tim Verthein started for the Eagles, going 7.1 innings, allowing four hits, one run and five walks while striking out three.
Jacobson,
Matt Trocke and Johnson each had two hits for UW-L.
Justin Lambert (4-3) took the loss for UW-Whitewater, going 8.1 innings, allowing nine hits, three runs and two walks with five strikeouts. Four different players had a hit for UW-Whitewater.
In the nightcap, the Warhawks scored the only run of the contest in the bottom of the 13th. Travis Wessels hit a one-out double and Dylan Friend was hit-by-pitch. Matt Beyer then hit the game-winning RBI single.
Lauersdorf (4-3) earned the loss for UW-L, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and one run.
Garrett Scray started for the Eagles, going 11.0 innings, allowing seven hits with five strikeouts.
Four different players had a hit for UW-L.
Eric Schmitz (1-0) picked up the victory for UW-Whitewater. He went 4.0 innings with three strikeouts. Jack Larsen started for the Warhawks, pitching 9.0 innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out five.
Wessels went 3-for-5 for the Warhawks while Daniel Putnam and Beyer were both 2-for-5.
