Pete Willson/Wheaton College (Ill.) Invite Brackets
Wheaton, Ill. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team finished 14th at the Pete Willson/Wheaton College (Ill.) Invitational Saturday. The Eagles totaled 59.5 team points while UW-Parkside won the invitational with 117.5. UW-Whitewater placed second (102.0) while the University of Mt. Union (Ohio) finished third (92.5). The University of Indianapolis (Ind.) was fourth (91.5) and Olivet College (Mich.) finished fifth (88.0). A total of 31 teams competed.
UW-L's
Grant Miller (184-pounds) and
Zach Strickland (197) placed fourth Saturday while
Billy Mayer (285) was third.
Miller, seeded seventh, finished fourth at 184-pounds with a 4-2 record. He lost by decision (3-1) to third-seed Aaron Stevenson of Indianapolis (Ind.) in the semifinals Saturday. Miller then won by decision (8-6) over fourth-seeded Matt Gille of UW-Parkside before dropping the third-place match by decision (7-2) to sixth-seed Ryan Pieper of Trine University (Ind.).
Strickland, seeded third at 197-pounds, also placed fourth Saturday. He went 4-2 overall. In the semifinals, Strickland lost by decision (4-2) to seventh-seeded Adam Latella of UW-Whitewater. He came back to won by decision (7-2) over Andrew Lovins of Heidelberg College (Ohio) before falling by decision (3-1) to fifth-seed Davion Willis of UW-Parkside in the third-place match.
The third-seeded Mayer went 5-1 in the two-day invitational. He lost by decision (2-1) to second-seed Corey Anderson of UW-Whitewater in Saturday's semifinals before coming back to win his next two matches. Mayer won by major decision (12-2) over fifth-seed Logan Renas of Olivet (Mich.) in the consolation bracket and won by decision (4-1) over seventh-seed Cody Lovejoy of Ohio Northern University in the third-place match.
