Wartburg and UW-La Crosse Capture National Titles

La Crosse, Wis. - Wartburg College (Iowa) won the women's title and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse captured the men's championship Saturday night at the 2013 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Knights won their fourth women's title in school history while the Eagles captured their 12th outdoor men's championship.

Women's Recap - Day 3

Wartburg won the women's title with 46 points as UW-Oshkosh finished second with 43 and Buffalo State (N.Y.) and Ramapo (N.J.) each totaled 41 points. UW-La Crosse (38), Illinois College (36), UW-Whitewater (27), Wheaton, Mass. (26), St. Thomas, Minn. (24) and Williams, Mass. (22) rounded out the top-10. A total of 72 teams scored points.

The Knights won their fourth title in school history, including the third in the last five years.

Wartburg had three runner-up finishes Saturday, including junior Sammi Bruett in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:26.60), junior Tashina McAllister in the 400-meter hurdles (59.65) and sophomore Kayla Hemann in the shot put (48-2).

UW-Oshkosh junior Christy Cazzola won three NCAA III titles and scored 30 points for the Titans Saturday. She swept the 800 (2:05.93), 1,500 (4:17.22) and 5,000-meter run (16:31.17). Cazzola set a championship record in winning the 800 and stadium records in the 1,500 and 5,000. The 1,500-meter title was her third straight national crown.

Illinois Wesleyan senior Tara Clemens was second (2:06.79) and Johns Hopkins senior Annie Monagle third (2:09.09) in the 800-meter run while St. Thomas senior Taylor Berg finished second (4:18.10) and Franklin & Marshall senior Sheena Crawley placed third (4:21.33) in the 1,500. Berg was also second (16:33.15) to Cazzola in the 5,000-meter run with California Lutheran sophomore Melissa Skiba finishing third (16:40.91).

Buffalo State swept the 100 and 200-meter dashes as senior Sasha Henry took the 100-meter dash (12.01) and junior Jazmin Dunham won the 200-meter dash (24.34). Buffalo State placed second (46.22) in the 4x100-meter relay Saturday with senior Patrice Johnson, Dunham, freshman Shuntone Pricher and Henry.

Junior Tobi Alli of Lehman was second (12.16) and junior Tiarra Goode of Birmingham-Southern third (12.29) in the 100-meter dash while Henry finished second (24.43) and sophomore Lexie Sondgeroth of UW-Whitewater third (24.61) in the 200-meter dash.

UW-La Crosse swept the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays. Sophomore Jaime Ludwigson, freshman Meg Heafy, sophomore Claire Elliott and sophomore Maya Vazquez set a stadium record (45.98) in winning the 4x100-meter relay while junior Jenna Halvorson, senior Rebecca Scheuermann, sophomore Shannon Klein and Elliott took the 4x400 (3:43.52). 

Wheaton (Mass.) was third (46.85) in the 4x100-meter relay with junior Amber Spencer, junior Ashante Little, senior Amanda Claflin and freshman Francesca Flynn.

Little won the 400-meter dash (54.79) Saturday while Montclair State senior Vainayaki Sivaji was second (55.44) and Rowan sophomore Brianna Crofton was third (55.68).

Colby was second (3:44.74) in the 4x400 with freshman Emily Doyle, junior Frances Onyilagha, freshman Emily Tolman and senior Brittney Bell while St. Thomas finished third (3:44.92) with sophomore Angela Tipp, sophomore Erika Tipp, sophomore Kayla Goeman and junior Emily Van Heel.

Illinois College senior Melissa Norville captured a pair of national crowns on the final day, winning the 100-meter hurdles (13.93) and her second straight triple jump (41-11 1/4). Norville won the long jump (20-5) Thursday.

Goode finished second (14.24) and Little third (14.31) in the 100-meter hurdles.

Moravian senior Micah Leonard was second (40-11) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps senior Reny Colton third (40-11) in the triple jump.

Junior Heather Gearity of Montclair State won her second consecutive 400-meter hurdles championship (59.31) with McAllister second and junior Cheynne Mangold of Washington & Jefferson third (1:00.18).

Senior Alyssa Smith of Geneseo State captured the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:17.38) with Wartburg's Bruett second and senior Keri Lambert of Amherst third (10:27.14).

In the field events, Salisbury senior Chelsea Tavik won the shot put (50-3 1/4) with Wartburg's Hemann second (48-2) and Concordia-Moorhead sophomore Cherae Reeves third (47-6 1/2).

George Fox senior Beth Stam won the javelin (156-2) while Whitworth freshman Kerry Wright finished second (148-5) and Washington University sophomore Melissa Gilkey third (145-2).

Men's Recap - Day 3

UW-La Crosse won its 12th NCAA Division III Championship on the men's side Saturday night. The 12 national titles are the most in NCAA III history. The Eagles secured their first outdoor title since 2007. UW-L earned the indoor national title in March, marking the 11th time in school history the team has swept the indoor and outdoor crowns.

UW-Eau Claire placed second Saturday with 64.0 points while UW-Oshkosh was third with 51.5 and UW-Whitewater fourth with 40.0. North Central (Ill.) placed fifth (36.0) overall followed by Oneonta, N.Y. (29.0), Whittier, Calif. (26.), Haverford, Pa. (23.0) and Bates, Maine (19.0). Whitworth (Wash.) and Defiance (Ohio) tied for 10th (16.0). A total of 79 teams scored points.

UW-L had a pair of second-place finishes Saturday, including Isaac Vazquez and Sean Royer. Vazquez, who won the long jump title Thursday, placed second (50-5 1/2) in the triple jump while Royer was second (1:50.51) in the 800-meter run. The Eagles' David Stilin finished third (14:28.34) in the 5,000-meter run.

UW-L's 4x100-meter relay placed third (40.95) with senior David Sikorski, sophomore Alex Koenen, sophomore Max Jessesski and Vazquez.

UW-Eau Claire took the 4x400-meter relay (3:09.20) with junior Jake Dennis-Oehling, sophomore Cody Prince, senior Marty Richardson and sophomore Thurgood Dennis.

Dennis captured the 100-meter dash (10.77) for the Blugolds while finishing second (20.86) in the 200-meter dash.

UW-Oshkosh had two of the top-three finishers in the shot put Saturday, including national champion senior Nick Baatz (58-11 3/4) and third-place finisher senior Pete Delzer (58-2 1/2).

UW-Whitewater senior Marcus Smith won the triple jump (51-4 1/4) while Warhawks' junior Dylan Crafton was third (21.45) in the 200-meter dash and sophomore Mark Miller was third (8:59.27) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Rutgers-Camden senior Tim VanLiew won his second consecutive javelin throw, setting an NCAA III Championship record as well as stadium mark (247-10). Elizabethtown senior Cameron Aregood was second (221-7) and Whitworth junior Joseph Ingman third (216-8).

Senior Sean Bernstein of Oneonta captured the 200-meter dash (20.81) Saturday and placed second (10.77) in the 100-meter dash. The 200 title was his second consecutive. Sophomore Bruce Gray of Greenville was third (10.94) in the 100-meter dash Saturday.

Oneonta won the 4x100-meter relay (40.82) with freshman Tom Wheeler, Bernstein, freshman Joe Carr and freshman Jake Alviene.

Whittier took the top-two places in the 400-meter dash with junior Kevin Curbelo winning (47.26) and freshman German Fabela second (47.41). Loras junior Josh Goerdt was third (47.55). Whitter was second in the 4x100-meter relay with Curbelo, senior Kimble Tillman, freshman Andres Vega and Fabela.

Birmingham-Southern senior Robert Willett won the 800-meter run (1:49.95) with Royer second (1:50.51) and Wheaton, Ill. senior Luke Vance third (1:51.23).

Junior Dan Sullivan of UW-Stevens Point took the national crown in the 1,500-meter run with a facility record (3:46.19) with senior Jordan Schilit of Haverford second (3:47.16) and junior Ryan Widzogwski of Keene State (3:48.59) third. Sullivan captured his second straight title in the 1,500.

In the 5,000-meter run, North Central junior John Crain took the national title (14:25.84) with Franciscan senior William Jones second (14:27.26) and Stilin from UW-L third (14:28.34).

Connecticut College junior Michel LeDuc won the 3,000-meter steeplechase (8:50.58) with Middlebury senior Jack Davies second (8:50.66) and UW-Whitewater's Miller third (8:59.27).

Salisbury freshman Luke Campbell won the 110-meter hurdles (14.43) with Marietta junior Ryan Lopez-Jordan second (14.44) and Coast Guard junior Adam Scalesse third (14.50). Mount Union sophomore Tyler Mettile won the 400-meter hurdles (51.24) while Rowan senior Demetrius Rooks finished second (51.69) and Campbell third (51.82).

Augustana was second (3:10.06) in the 4x400-meter relay with senior Greg Patton, sophomore Antonio Owens, sophomore David Voland and senior Alex Rindone (3:10.06). Ohio Wesleyan was third (3:10.40) with senior Silas Jolliff, freshman Adam Turner, senior Matt Martin and senior Ethan Freet.

St. Thomas senior Eyo Ekpo was third in the triple jump (50-5 1/4) behind UW-Whitewater's Smith and UW-L's Vazquez.

Bates senior David Pless finished second (58-8) in the shot put with UW-Oshkosh's Baatz winning and Delzer placing third.
