Box Score Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell 77-74 at UW-Platteville Wednesday night at Bo Ryan Court in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener for both teams. The Eagles drop to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in the WIAC while the Pioneers improve to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
UW-Platteville led 12-10 with 12:23 left in the first half when it went on a 11-2 run to lead 23-12. UW-L responded with a 18-3 run to take a 30-26 advantage with 4:15 remaining.
Jenna Anderson had seven points in the run.
The Pioneers came back to take a 33-32 lead with 2:06 left in the opening half as Marley Campbell hit one-of-two at the free throw line. The Eagles scored the game's next eight points to lead 40-33 before Rachel Cropp cut the Pioneers' deficit to 40-36 at halftime with a three-point field goal with :01 left.
UW-Platteville opened the second half scoring the first 16 points to lead 52-40 with 16:29 remaining. The Pioneers made their first six shots from the field in the second half and all three free throw attempts. The Eagles missed their first six shots from the field in the second 20 minutes of action before
MaKenzie Miller's layup cut the lead to 52-42 with 15:59 left.
UW-L later used a 13-2 run to cut the lead to 60-59 with 8:36 remaining after a
Rachel Atchison three-pointer. The Eagles trailed 68-64 with 5:19 left, but scored eight of the next nine points to lead 72-69 with 3:34 left. UW-Platteville took a 73-72 lead with 1:56 remaining on a pair of Stacy Clark free throws before UW-L regained the lead an Anderson jumper with 1:01 left to make it 74-73. Both teams missed three-point attempts on its next possession when Cropp was fouled with :15 remaining. She converted both free throws for a 75-74 lead. After UW-L turned the ball over with :06 remaining and called for a foul, Cropp hit two free throws to make it 77-74.
Mikayla Simmons missed a potential tying three-point field goal at the buzzer.
UW-L shot 47.4% from the field, including 28.6% (four-of-14) from three-point range, and 80.0% (16-of-20) at the free throw line.
Anderson and Miller led five players in double figures for the Eagles with 16 points each.
Cameron Chapin finished with 12 points while
Rachel Atchison totaled 11 and
Maggi Bishop 10. Miller had a game-high nine rebounds while Bishop finished with eight.
UW-Platteville shot 38.7% from the field, including 33.3% (six-of-18) from three-point range, and 69.7% (23-of-33) at the line.
Clark led the Pioneers with 19 points while Cropp finished with 17. Alyssa Krajco had 15 points and Keeley Schulz 11. Krajco and Schulz both had six rebounds.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, December 6 at UW-Stout at 3 p.m.
