Box Score Superior, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team earned a 72-63 road win at UW-Superior Saturday evening in Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium. The Eagles improve to 15-9 overall and 9-6 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Yellowjackets drop to 7-16 overall and 4-10 in the conference.
UW-L led 13-11 with 12:00 remaining in the first half after a
Calahan Skogman three-point field goal. UW-Superior then went on a 10-2 run to take a 21-15 advantage with 9:10 left. The Yellowjackets later led 30-27 with 4:05 remaining when the Eagles finished the half on a 12-2 run to lead 39-32.
Luke Tweed scored five points and
Braden Tice four in the UW-L run. Tice also had a pair of steals.
The Eagles led 46-41 with 16:14 left in the game when they used a 10-2 run to take their largest lead of the game at 56-43 with 11:41 remaining. UW-Superior cut the deficit to 62-59 with 2:55 left after a Jarrod Peterson layup, but UW-L scored six of the next eight points to lead 68-61 with 1:17 remaining as
Lucas Collom and Tice each hit a three-point field goal.
The Yellowjackets could get no closer than five points the rest of the game.
UW-L shot 42.9% from the field, including 34.5% (10-of-29) from three-point range and 57.1% (eight-of-14) at the free throw line.
Tweed led the Eagles with 15 points, finishing six-of-12 from the field, including three-of-five from three-point range. Skogman added 14 points while Collom finished with 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Tice totaled nine points and led UW-L with six assists and four steals. He also grabbed five rebounds.
UW-Superior finished 44.4% from the field, including 50.0% (six-of-12) from three-point range, and 69.2% (nine-of-13) at the line.
Peterson lead the Yellowjackets with 22 points while Bronson Byrne finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. Aaron Corry had a game-high 11 rebounds.
UW-L returns to action Wednesday, February 19 hosting UW-Stout at 7 p.m. in Mitchell Hall in the Eagles' regular-season finale.
