Soccer Team Remains Undefeated in WIAC; Extend Winning Streak

Kennedy Brault recorded her third shutout of the season Saturday afternoon.
Box Score Eau Claire, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team earned 1-0 victory at UW-Eau Claire Saturday afternoon at Bollinger Fields.  The Eagles improve to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Blugolds drop to 3-5-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.  UWL is 3-0 in the WIAC for the first time since starting 4-0 in 1999.

UWL recorded its fifth straight win with Saturday's victory, matching its longest winning streak since 2003.  The Eagles won a school record seven consecutive matches in 1994 and 1999.

It is UWL's fifth win in school history over UW-Eau Claire, cutting the Blugolds all-time series lead to 17-5-6.  The Eagles picked up their second straight win over the Blugolds after notching a 2-1 victory last season in La Crosse.  Prior to the 2014 meeting, UWL was 0-8-3 in the previous 11 meetings with UW-Eau Claire.

The Eagles tallied the only goal of the match Saturday at 23:13 with Cassie Handrick scoring her second goal of the season.  Alex Cording recorded her team-leading fourth assist of the season.  "Cassie Handrick came off the bench today and immediately made an impact by scoring," said UWL head coach Jason Murphy.  "Credit it to her, as it takes a great mindset to be preparded and impact the match that quickly off the bench."

UWL finished with seven shots in the match, including four on goal.  UW-Eau Claire also totaled seven shots with six on goal.

Kennedy Brault earned the shutout in goal for the Eagles, registering six saves.  Sammie Lefaive finished with three saves for the Blugolds.

UWL totaled 10 corner kicks, including seven in the second half.  UW-Eau Claire finished with three corner kicks.

"We are pleased to get another conference road win," said Murphy.  "UW-Eau Claire was hard working and organized.  It took a great effort from everyone to get the result.  I'm so proud of this group of players.  They have done more than we could ask for to this point, and we know they will continue to get better everyday.  It was a great day to be part of the UWL soccer program."

UWL returns to action Wednesday, October 7 hosting Saint Mary's University (Minn.) at 7 p.m.
