Iowa State Quadrangular Results
Ames, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse gymnastics team placed fourth at the Iowa State University Quadrangular Sunday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum. The Eagles finished with a school record score of 192.900, breaking the record of 191.525 set at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championships March 28, 2015. UWL also set a school record in the vault with a score of 48.325 Sunday, breaking the record of 48.175 versus Illinois State University February 22, 2009.
The Eagles recorded their second-highest total in school history on the uneven parallel bars Sunday with a 48.275 and tied their second-highest total on the floor exercise at 48.775. UWL had a school record 48.375 on the uneven parallel bars at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC)/NCGA West Regional Championships March 15, 2015 and a school record 49.100 on the floor exercise at the NCGA Championships April 2, 2004. The team tied the second-highest total of 48.775 on the floor exercise from the WIAC Championship/NCGA West Regional March 9, 2013.
UWL finished with a 47.525 on the balance beam Sunday as it set single season-highs on all four events.
"It was a great meet for the Eagles," said UWL head coach
Barbara Gibson. "We stayed within our own bubble and competed to our potential."
North Carolina State University won the quadrangular with a score of 195.450 while the University of Nebraska was second at 195.350 and Iowa State third with 194.900. Nebraska is ranked 14th on the Road to Nationals Top-25 Poll for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I.
Individually, UWL's
Dani Barmore placed sixth in the all-around Sunday with a school record score of 38.800, breaking the record of 38.650 by
Christa Booman at the NCGA Championships March 25, 2011. Booman also had the second-highest total of 38.625 at the Illinois State Quadrangular February 18, 2011.
Barmore was 13th on the balance beam (9.650) Sunday, 14th on the uneven parallel bars (9.725), tied for 15th on the vault (9.725) and tied for 19th on the floor exercise (9.700).
"Dani was focused and attacking all four events today," said Gibson. "To establish a new all-around record is a great achievement."
The Eagles'
Samantha Wiekamp placed seventh in the all-around Sunday with a score of 38.475, the fourth-highest individual total in school history. She finished tied for 11th on the vault (9.750), tied for 15th on the floor exercise (9.275), 18th on the uneven parallel bars (9.625) and 20th on the balance beam (9.375). Wiekamp also set a personal-best score.
UWL's
Elsa Spitzmueller was the team's top individual finisher Sunday, tying for fourth on the floor exercise (9.875). Her score of 9.875 tied UWL's school record set by
Jennifer Houle at the NCGA Championships April 2, 2004. The Eagles'
Chelsie Richards,
Amy Enright and
Savana Kettner tied for 15th on the floor exercise (9.725) Sunday.
"Elsa had a beautiful set and her tumbling was flawless," said Gibson.
Enright tied for fifth overall on the uneven parallel bars (9.825) while
Lauren Wilson was 19th (9.575) and
Carly Kiesow 20th (9.525). Enright's score of 9.825 tied for the second-highest score in school history. She holds the school record of 9.850 at the WIAC/NCGA West Regional Championships March 15, 2015.
Nina Schubert also scored 9.825 at the NCGA Championships March 24, 2006.
Leah Spankowski was UWL's top-finisher on the balance beam Sunday with a 12th-place showing (9.675).
Kari Willett tied for 17th (9.550) on the beam. Spankowski and Willett tied for 20th on the vault (9.625).
UWL returns to action Saturday, February 27 at UW-Whitewater at 4 p.m.
