St. Paul, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team earned a 70-55 victory at Macalester College (Minn.) Thursday night in Leonard Center. The Eagles improve to 4-2 on the season while the Scots drop to 1-3.
Macalester (Minn.) led 13-9 with 3:42 left in the first quarter on a Justine Barraza three-point field goal, but UWL finished the quarter on a 10-4 run to lead 19-17.
Ava Kramer's three-point play with :26 remaining gave the Eagles the two-point lead after the first period. UWL would never trail the rest of the game. The Eagles opened the second quarter on a 13-2 run to lead 32-19 after
Sierra Watrud's layup. The Scots came back with a 13-4 run of their own to cut the lead to 36-32 with 1:17 left.
Elise DeNoyer's layup and Kramer's free throw provided a 39-32 halftime lead for UWL.
UWL scored the first seven points of the third quarter to lead 46-32 with
Dani Craig's three-point field goal and two-point jumper as well as
Kylee Marks' layup. The Eagles led 54-42 at the end of the third quarter. Macalester (Minn.) cut the deficit to 55-46 with 9:07 left in the fourth quarter on Holly Hull's layup, but the Scots could get no closer. UWL led by as many as 17 points in the fourth quarter.
UWL shot 41.7% from the field, including 38.9% (seven-of-18) from three-point range, and 72.2% (13-of-18) at the free throw line. The Eagles shot 53.3% (16-of-30) from the field in the first half. Kramer led UWL with a career-high 22 points and four steals. She finished seven-of-12 from the field, including one-of-two from three-point range, and seven-of-nine at the line. DeNoyer finished with 12 points and team-high seven rebounds while Craig totaled 10 points.
Macalester (Minn.) shot 37.7% from the field, including 38.5% (five-of-13) from three-point range, and 52.6% (10-of-19) at the line. Leah Gray led the Scots with 12 points while Regan Fruh and Hull each finished with nine. Hull had a team-high seven rebounds.
UWL returns to action Saturday, December 2 hosting Bethany Lutheran College (Minn.) at 6 p.m.
