UWL Earns Win at Nationally-Ranked UW-Whitewater

Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team earned a 66-62 victory at 14th-ranked UW-Whitewater Saturday afternoon in Kachel Gymnasium. The Eagles improve to 11-6 overall and 4-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Warhawks drop to 14-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference. UW-Whitewater entered the game ranked 14th in this week's D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll.

UWL snapped a 12-game losing streak to UW-Whitewater with Saturday's win, the Eagles first victory over the Warhawks since a 71-68 overtime win December 7, 2011 in La Crosse. It is UWL's first win at UW-Whitewater since a 73-66 victory February 3, 2011.

UWL went on to finish 20-8 overall and 12-4 in the WIAC in 2010-11 while earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championships.

UW-Whitewater raced out to an 8-1 lead in Saturday's game with Brooke Trewyn scoring four points. UWL responded with a 7-0 run of its own to force an 8-8 tie with 4:05 left in the first quarter on Annie Schumacher's three-point field goal. UW-Whitewater took a 14-12 lead at the end of the first quarter on a Trewyn jumper with :16 remaining.

UWL outscored UW-Whitewater, 16-8, in the second quarter to take a 28-22 halftime advantage. The Eagles trailed 20-17 when they used a 7-0 run to lead 24-20 on a pair of Elise DeNoyer free throws with 4:38 left. UW-Whitewater was held scoreless the final 4:09 of the half.

The Eagles led by as many as seven points in the third quarter, 43-36 with 3:03 left, on a DeNoyer jumper. Malia Smith's layup and Trewyn's three-pointer for the Warhawks cut the deficit to 43-41 with 2:15 remaining before the Eagles took a 47-43 lead after three quarters.

Taylor Nelson's three-point play with 6:04 remaining in the fourth quarter gave UWL its largest lead of the game at 53-45. UW-Whitewater went on a 9-0 run to lead 54-53 with 4:04 left after Andrea Meinert's jumper. The game was tied, 57-57 with 1:53 left, on DeNoyer's layup and the Eagles took the lead for good on Dani Craig's three-pointer with 1:10 remaining. Ava Kramer hit a pair of free throws with :42 remaining after a Trewyn turnover to make it 62-57. Meinert cut the deficit to 62-59 with two free throws with :27 left before UWL made four-of-six free throws in the final :25 to secure the victory.

UWL shot 46.7% from the field Saturday, including 46.2% (six-of-13) from three-point range, and 72.0% (18-of-25) at the free throw line. DeNoyer led four players in double figures with 14 points while Craig finished with 13. Delaney Schoenenberger and Nelson each had 11 points for the Eagles. DeNoyer also led the team with eight rebounds and three assists.

UW-Whitewater shot 37.7% from the field, including 27.3% (six-of-22) from three-point range, and 50.0% (four-of-eight) at the line. Trewyn led the Warhawks with 23 points while Meinert finished with 11 points, six assists and four blocks. Trewyn and Olivia Freckmann each had a team-leading seven rebounds.

UWL returns to action Wednesday, January 24 hosting UW-Stout at 7 p.m.
